Cubist portrait by New Yorker artist Constantine Alajalov
Constantin Alajalov (1900-1987)
Abstracted man on ship. 068 ca. 1922;
Watercolor & gouache, 18.5 x 10.5" signed lower right.
Based on the signature, this is possibly the earliest known work by Alajalov, and certainly predates his earliest New Yorker covers of 1926, which he described as “Cubist.” This may well be an abstracted portrait of the captain of the vessel that brought him to the US in 1922.
Very good condition; white gold frame and UV-filtered plexiglas.
